A Catalyst for Crime: PEI RCMP charge five in connection with converter thefts, more than $100K in damage

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island – A rise in catalytic converter thefts in Canada’s smallest province has triggered a crackdown from the PEI RCMP on the lucrative illegal trend, signalled by a number of charges laid over the last three months.

While police did manage to recover some of the stolen catalytic converters, all said, the thefts accounted for more than $100,000 in estimated damages for auto recyclers in PEI.

As it stands, five people have been charged in connection with the thefts. The charges stem from 23 complaints which affected 11 businesses and about 60 vehicles at this point of the investigation.

The RCMP would like to thank those who assisted with this investigation and ask anyone who feels a crime has been committed to contact their local police detachment or call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
