Recyclers Begin Training for National Code of Practice

MISSISSAUGA ON — May 23 2009 — Automotive recyclers have already begun training to uphold the industry’s new National Code of Practice. The new code is in support of Retire Your Ride Canada’s national vehicle retirement strategy.

A day long training event was held in Mississauga Ontario with 25 companies in attendance. The training was conducted by Colin McKeon. McKeon is well acquainted with the training as his home province of British Columbia has had a code very similar to the new national code for the last seven years.

Steve Fletcher executive director of Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) notes that the training has been recorded including a supplemental day and a half session at Standard Auto Wreckers in Toronto and Carcone’s Auto Recycling in Aurora.

“This will help us to create our own inter-industry training model” says Fletcher. “The target of the expanded training will be repairers and insurers.” There are plans to turn the video training into an online experience.

“We’ll keep adding modules as we see opportunities” says Fletcher. “Ultimatley we’d like bring collision repairersinto the process so they can demonstrate what happens to parts in the shop.

A French version of the training is planned for the summer and the training will also soon be available in Atlantic Canada. Two more sessions are currently planned for Ontario. Please watch this space for further details.
