Further Use for Fluids: Used motor oil and antifreeze accepted for recycling in B.C.

Abbotsford, British Columbia — The GFL Transfer Station and Recycling Facility on Vye Road in Abbotsford, B.C. is now accepting used motor oil, antifreeze, filters and containers.

The facility now has a 20-foot modified shipping container installed on-site to collect the items, thanks to a grant received from the B.C. Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA). There is no charge to customers who drop off their used oil and antifreeze materials and detailed signage explains the steps to properly recycle these items.

David Lawes, executive director of BCUOMA, said used oil that is recycled can be refined into a new lubricating oil to be used as a fuel in pulp mills, cement plants and asphalt plants.

Refined oil can also be used by car owners, vehicle maintenance facilities and other machinery maintenance operations, according to Lawes.

Lawes also said oil filters contain reusable scrap metal, which steel producers can reuse for metal products like rebar, nails and wire.

Used antifreeze can be reprocessed to produce new automotive antifreeze, while plastic containers can be recycled into new oil containers, flower pots, pipe, guardrails—even patio furniture.

According to Lawes, approximately 500 million litres of oil and three million litres of antifreeze are collected at approximately 300 public collection facilities and some-4,000 generators across the province each year—all of which are managed by the BCUOMA program.
