This culminated, in part, with the adoption of O. Reg. 85/16 in 2016, which finally obligated ELV recyclers in Ontario to process material safely and responsibly. This includes the removal of all automotive oils and greases, coolant, fuel, and windshield fluid. This was modelled after existing legislation adopted by Europe and Japan. In the U.S., Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (formerly Fiat-Chrysler) established the U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR), in part, to improve automotive recyclability. The U.S. is stressing the importance of increasing ELV recycling rates, and many U.S. stake holders are voluntarily meeting responsible recycling mandates to avoid the need to legislate restrictive laws. Responsible ELV recycling is clearly here in a big way.
