Berlin, Germany — BMW has announced that it is planning on beginning to ship vehicles to German buyers with cooking oil rather than regular diesel in the engines.
The new renewable diesel project is known as HVO100, or hydrotreated vegetable oil. The oil is specifically made from various waste products, including used cooking oil.
As noted by online sources, the recycled fuel doesn’t contain conventional biodiesel and in order to be considered as sustainable, it also does not contain any palm.
BMW also commented in an official statement that the recycled biofuel is better for cold starts and is resistant to microbial contamination.
Beginning in late January, BMW will thus be putting five to eight litres of HV100 into some vehicle tanks as they leave the assembly line.
Additionally, some vehicle models made since March 2015 will be able to use the fuel, which is currently available in public fuel stations in Germany.
