Ottawa, Ontario — The Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) released a statement to the industry following U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports.
“[This is] a move widely interpreted as politically motived rather than a sound monetary policing or cooperative efforts to benefit mutual interests,” wrote the organization in a March X statement.
“The U.S. government framed these tariffs as necessary for national security, but many critics argue that they are designed to exert political pressure on Canada.”
“In immediate response, Canada struck back with its own 25 percent tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, and warned of further escalation if the U.S. measures persist.”
The statement adds that, for Canada’s automotive recycling and parts industry, the impact is significant.
“The tariffs increase the cost of exporting recycled automotive parts to the U.S., while also raising the prices of imported components needed for production. The dual pressure risks reducing competitiveness, squeezing profit margins and complicating supply chains, thereby hurting an industry that already plays a vital role in supporting local economies.”
The ARC has also stressed that it’s more important than ever to support Canadian businesses.
“By choosing Canadian-made automotive parts and services, consumers can help bolster the domestic industry and mitigate some of the adverse effects brought on by these politically charged measures.”
“Buy Canadian. Support local businesses.”
