Agenda Announced: 30th International Congress for Battery Recycling

Toronto, Ontario — The International Congress for Battery Recycling is hosting its 30th annual conference Valencia, Spain from September 10 to 12.

The even will feature more than a dozen focused technical sessions, two regulatory workshops and keynote addresses from policymakers and industry executives tackling the latest changes in battery legislation and recycling technologies. A delegate pass is priced at €1,890. Attendees will gain access to presentations, exhibits, networking events and workshops focused on regulation, sustainability and innovation in the lithium-ion battery lifecycle.

Paul Hagen of U.S.-based Beveridge and Diamond will speak on evolving European legal frameworks, alongside Rana Pant of the European Commission’s DG Environment and José Pérez García of ECOPILAS. Other high-profile speakers include Shabnam Gholamifard from Veolia and Lee Allen of Fastmarkets.

The opening day will feature a market outlook with Hans Eric Melin of Circular Energy Storage and a techno-economic analysis of hydrometallurgy from Fundación CIRCE. That afternoon, experts from Umicore, BASF and Bebat will address how EU regulation is impacting battery collection and processing strategies.

In parallel, innovators such as Andrea Mirandola of Duesenfeld and Andres Venafri of Smiths Detection will present breakthroughs in AI-powered sorting and advanced disassembly. A panel moderated by ECOPILAS will examine Spain’s end-of-life battery policy against EU benchmarks, featuring stakeholders from Recyclia, Recypilas and the regional government.

Sessions on Sept. 11 will explore direct recycling, second-life applications and lifecycle emissions. Antoine Driancourt of France’s CEA and Marta Rodrigo from Spain’s ITC will present on restoring active materials and cathode components. Melanie Golomb of RWTH Aachen will share life-cycle assessments of recycling processes, while Irdanto Lase of Minviro UK will compare recycled and virgin raw material footprints.

The congress will also address future challenges in battery reuse, critical raw material refining and fire prevention in collection systems. Lee Butler of Glencore will moderate discussions on refining technology, including research led by Aalto University and Sweden’s Swerim AB.

Friday’s workshops include one on PFAS emissions led by Claude Chanson of RECHARGE and another on lithium battery transport safety, guided by Johan Van Peperzeel and Marco Ottaviani. Both sessions offer open-floor engagement with regulatory experts and consultants advising on ADR 2025 and Basel Convention frameworks.

Canadian stakeholders may find particular relevance in sessions tackling North American market stewardship, fire prevention standards and sustainable scaling, with Call2Recycle and ElectraMet among the featured North American presenters.
