Video: Modern shredders are a ‘technological wonder’

A shredder going full speed ahead. A modern shredder is capable of processing a staggering amount of material per hour.

Hamilton, Ontario — February 24, 2016 — It’s a vital component of the automotive recycling value chain, but how often do we think of the humble shredder? The old saying is “out of sight, out mind,” but we would do well to consider the benefits this provides to the automotive recycling industry and the world.

Today’s shredder is a technological wonder, according to a video released by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI).

It’s not an outrageous claim. Capable of processing up to 300 to 400 tons of scrap metal per hour, the shredder separates metals into various feed stocks. In the end, this has various environmental and economic benefits, including reducing greenhouse gases and impacts from mining.

The ISRI video likens the invention of the shredder to innovations such as the printing press, the internal combustion engine and the personal computer.

The video also includes a tour of a shredding operation and the history of the shredder’s invention. You can check it out in the player below.
